Celebrate Black History, Share your Inspiration Story and earn a Scholarship

Alltel Wireless is sponsoring the

Black History Month Words of Wisdom Essay Contest.

Write an essay based on the previous topic.
The Prize:
Ten winners will be chosen from all essays submitted to the contest. Each winning essayist will receive a $10,000 scholarship to a participating black college or university.
All 10 winners will be honored at an awards luncheon to be held Thursday, March 12th, 2009 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Words of Wisdom spokesperson and esteemed poet and author, Dr. Maya Angelou, will personally present each winner with their scholarship. In addition, there will be a student reception March 11, 2009 featuring R&B sensation Musiq Soulchild..

The Words of Wisdom essay contest is open to current and prospective students* of America's participating black colleges and universities. On Becoming Independent - Hands-off Teaching/Hands-on Learning

I was leading an activity with children at the zoo. We were making luminaries. I explained how to do it, made some myself along side the kiddies, gave kids the materials and cheered them on as they took off. Then I watched the parents. Some parents worked with their youngsters, holding the stencil or the markers. Other parents were doing the craft for the child, particularly if they were very young - which makes sense. But it was remarkable to see how some children were allowed to do the activity with hardly any input from the parents. Those children seemed more creative, relaxed, and spent some time creating some very nice paper bag luminaries. I especially credit the parents for being patient as opposed to criticizing them for being inattentive.

On the other hand there were some parents who took charge of the activity. They directed the child, helped choose the stencil or in some cases selected it for the child. There seemed to be a control over the activity where the child was second chair to the parent. They were compelled to do the activity a certain way, "the right way" - trace the stencil perfectly, don't embellish the picture with color or free-hand art, use certain color markers. Sometimes it was because the parents were impatient and seemed to rush the activity to get it over with.

As I watched those parent-child interactions, it got me to thinking about something I noticed when I was in high school classroom and at the job house. Some formative experiences may have shaped some people to be less independent. Many people (not just children) seem absolutely afraid to take risks and make mistakes. For example, whenever I gave a pre-test or open-lab assignment or an independent project, I had some students who just hated it. They lost it. Got belligerent. They wanted to be told exactly what to do, how to do and immediately rewarded. Free-thinking was not at all appealing to them. There was a right way, a singular way to do things and they did not care about the hows and whys of the matter.

At the job house, my employees struggled with executing projects without serious oversight. They got frustrated and often gave up quickly because things didn't appear to work out the first time. They did not take criticism well, even mild criticism. They always expected a positive response even when they knew they hadn't tried their best or were properly trained to handle a task. I had a host of issues, including managing them, which is why I eventually left the job. I wasn't a great fit.

What I realized is that my preferred teaching/leading style is Authoritative. I give you instructions or guidelines, explain the boundaries, but give you free opportunity to figure the rest out. How I see it, I can only facilitate learning. I can't make you learn. You can ask questions, challenge the rules, be absolutely creative. It's okay if things don't work out the first time or second time. Learning or perfecting a skill involved mistakes. In fact you learn more when don't get in right the first time, because you get positive feedback and the chance to practice what you've learned.

For these frustrated learners/workers they don't want to ponder the mistake or see correctness in alternative views. Thinking back to those kids whose parents made them do things a certain way, they may have a hard time making their own decisions when their parents are absent. What do I like? How can I get this done? Can I feel confident about what I have done? And that confidence in doing something for one's self is very important.

As these thoughts were on my mind, I was listening to NPR's To the Best of Our Knowledge program about craftsmanship (Reconsidering Crafts, Dec 14, 2008). A Craft is a skill, an effort to work hard at something, to do it well and produce a product that is sound and sometimes beautiful. Skills such as carpentry, or quilt-making, landscaping, candle-making - these are crafts. But service jobs are also crafts - such as nursing, surgery, plus hair and skin care. How seriously one takes his or her profession in providing the best possible product or service to enhance or enrich the lives of your clients. Lack of facilitated learning, positive feedback, and the requirement to practice and revise actually hurts some people, at least I think so.

This idea of working hard and doing something is essential to personal pride and satisfaction with one's place in life, I think. From my personal observations, poor people are not respected or treated as if there is something in life that they CAN do, do it well, and enjoy doing. Regrettably, urban schools are so frustrating and confusing that children aren't given the chance to truly learn. They forced to listen and regurgitate and get it right the first time. Learning, particularly hands-on learning is thrown away by 4th grade. This hands-on learning is much like the act of learning a craft, becoming skilled at something. My employees did not want to work hard, so no value in it and as a result struggled to fit into the work place and it very program that was supposed to help them out of poverty seemed to fail them.

He talked about his book "The Craftsman" in which he makes the case that our definition of craft should be expanded to include any job a person commits to executing to the best of their abilities. He tells Steve Paulson that lots of working-class people care about what they do, with no expectation of material reward.

Public Libraries as Egalitarian Institutions


I spent the day in the public library studying and writing. Public libraries are perhaps the most under-appreciated and over-looked information and education resources in American cities and towns. Specifically thinking about socioeconomic and class issues to information and resource access, public libraries really do address these issues. Not only can one check out literature (fiction and non-fiction) but the catalogs of education books, texts and references for all levels is a marvel. Libraries have always been the place where one can access public archives and texts, and now they are internet hubs, too.

Though funding varies from place to place, most modern libraries have free computer and internet access for any member of the public. Competition for these computers can be fierce, but it is available. Also, libraries offer free literacy classes, GED preparation, and computer lessons. They also serve as community meeting places.

Public Libraries are great education resources. Support your library, host an informal class or make a donation. It’s for everyone – all ages, all education levels, all economic levels. Few institutions are truly as egalitarian as our libraries.

Digital Media & Learning Competition for Innovation


My new Facebook friend P.I. of Cleveland State and my good friend Villager of Black Data Processors Association Education and Technology Foundation are both promoting the Digital Media and Learning Competition.

I hate I learned about this so late. I surely would have promoted this Competition when I blogged about National Digital Media Day. This competition awards BIG Bucks to Innovative Young People and Groups who develop projects on the theme: Participatory Learning. Participatory Learning includes the many ways that learners (of any age) use new technologies to participate in virtual communities where they share ideas, comment upon one another's projects, and plan, design, advance, implement, or simply discuss their goals and ideas together.

There are two Competitive Categories
1. Innovation in Participatory Learning Awards for Institutions awarding $30,000 - $250,000. Details here.

2. Young Innovator Awards for Individuals ages 18-25 $5,000-$30,000
The Young Innovator Awards encourage innovators aged 18-25 to think boldly about "what comes next" in participatory learning and to contribute to making it happen. These awards will help young innovators bring their visionary ideas from the "garage" stage to implementation. Additional details here.
The deadline for both Awards are October 15, 2008. It’s coming soon.

Black Bloggers for Education are participating in the Blogger Challenge 2008


Donors Choose is an annual fundraiser that raises money to supply classrooms with the things they need. Teachers from low-income schools request certain materials and money for those materials. National Digital Media Day - Using Tech for STEM Education

Digital Media has really made a big impact in our world today. Think about it, some of us are easier to catch up with on line than on the phone or would rather send a text than write a letter. Digital media certainly does make life easier and convenient.

I think blogs and the internet in general have an amazing capacity to share information and educate the public. Teachers, students and parents can go to the internet and discover and download the world. Digital Media can be used (and are being used) to improve math and science education by enhancing and supplementing curriculum, aiding in research and independent study projects, and by just improving learning. It's all there.

Just googling can uncover gems.
The Smithsonian: Encyclopedia Smithsonian Science & Technology - everything from space, planet, animals, physics, forensics, conservation, to communications.

Or checking out any of the science, math, and education websites and blogs I have listed on my side bar.

Also, two of my fellow AfroSpear Members: Eddie Griffin and Fredric Mitchell.

Eddie Griffin's New School of Human Rights is a strong advocate of math education and enhanced critical thinking skills among today's urban youth. In fact, his tag line reads: "Building education systems online to propel our children to be the best that they can be." An archive post: Towards Solving the Math-Science Achievement Gap which is a bold proposal to solve this achievement gap using technology.

Fredric Mitchell with Young Black Professional Guide, is a web developer based in Chicago who hopes to one day start a foundation to support young, Black males in programming and computer science.


Though the use of Digital Media is great and can benefit all, it is not a universally accessible tool -- at least not just yet.
Our society still needs to address and solve the matters of access and affordability of these technologies. And we still need to close the computer literacy gap by introducing these technologies and helping members of under-resourced communities learn to fully utilize them in way that doesn't make them feel alienated.

In the meantime, I think lauding the benefits of Digital Media is a great start.

Constitution Day

On this day in 1787, the United States Constitution was signed. Each year on September 17th, many of us reflect on the historical and political significance of this document – Constitution Day. This point in time, and in this excited political climate, I see the need of a good-old-fashioned Civics Education. Civics was a Social Studies/US History & Government class most public school students were required to take in 9th or 10the grade. I hear many people completely mis-interpret, mis-translate, and mis-explain aspects of US (Federal & State) governing policies. Public Education programs – formal and informal – are perfect opportunities inspired by such celebration days, to help clarify some basic Civics Education I think is so desperately needed.
I was listening to the Diane Rehm Show today that featured Laurence Tribe. He is a Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard University and author of more than 100 books and articles, including "American Constitutional Law," "On Reading the Constitution," and "Abortion: The Clash of Absolutes". He talked about his work: The Invisible Constitution (Inalienable Rights). He goes through each amendment and gives historical context, explanations, and consensus of the ‘unwritten’ interpretations of the Constitution. Very interesting. I recommend listening to it.

Science and Policy in US Politics

The Executive and Legislative Branches of our government are responsible for some important decisions concerning our lives, livelihood and our future. Science is everywhere, and there are dedicated scholars who spend their lives studying important phenonmena and events to increase out world body of knowledge. But how does this dense, nuanced information make it to the minds of the people who make the decisions and control the purse strings and regulatory strings? Another question, are our leaders making informed decisions are they shooting from the hip. Be informed about the state of scientific comprehension of our leaders

1. Report on Presidential Science Advice.

State of Science Education Today

Below is a letter to Members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) about the State of Science Education: The Education of Future Scientists by Dr. Alan Leshner, CEO of the largest professional society of physical & natural scientists, engineers, and social scientists.

Sciene and Science Education are important. Segments of society that are under-educated in science and math will not be able to fully participate (and advocate for themselves) in 21st century dynamics. Our health, food supply, living situations, medical care and even job opportunties are becoming more sophisticated and steeped in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) advancement.

We are living in a time when science and technology are embedded in every aspect of modern life, and therefore we must make sure that all students have familiarity with and a strong grounding in the nature of science and its core concepts. In addition, to assure a future of continuing scientific innovation, educators must continue to draw talented students into the science profession.

AAAS has had an array of direct impacts on how science is taught through our
Project 2061, which laid the groundwork for science education standards, created benchmarks for science literacy, and has ongoing efforts to reform curriculum, instruction, and assessment. A Japanese translation of educational concepts for science literacy, workshops for teachers on how to use our Atlas of Science Literacy, and a field test of assessment tools for use in middle school classrooms are a few examples of Project 2061's recent efforts.

We further promote quality science education through
Science NetLinks and its nearly 500 complete standards-based science lessons -- all freely accessible on the web. We engage budding scientists with radio programs, weekly online stories, events for families, and our Kinetic City after-school program. AAAS also recently helped create new science, mathematics, and technology resources for elected school board members across the United States. In addition, 48 middle-grade science and math teachers in Washington, D.C., recently earned master's degrees from The George Washington University in a free, three-year program held at AAAS.

But promoting science literacy and quality education is not enough to guarantee a new crop of professional scientists. We also must educate students about science career opportunities. AAAS has programs to help underrepresented minorities and students with disabilities enter the science work force. In addition, our
Science Careers website is the most comprehensive resource for career advice and job openings.

Wanted: Science Students

I was talking to a colleague the other day about getting some graduate students in his lab. He's a new faculty member at a rather large, very nice public university. He has some funding, is a great researcher, very personable - but doesn't have any students.

Now, going to graduate school (in science) is a bit of a random shuffle. It's not like Business grad school where you're taking more of the same classes, except it's harder and fast-paced. Science is different because of the demands of independent research, you just don't "enroll somewhere". It's a process. You have to come in half-way knowing Whay you want to do and How to do it. It's all about the networks -- who recommended you and why do want to work with this professor? But his angst was -how to find students and at least make a pitch to them.

I thought, if I had the academic position of my dreams - at ann undergrad college - I sure could address his need. I want to teach undergrads and lead small teams of them in mini-research projects. I would be able to train them in basic science research, help them figure how things are done, encourage them to consider grad school - even introduce them to my colleagues (whom I went to grad school with) and get them in some pretty prestigious labs. In other words, I'd be the head of a prep school for future scientists. And considering my personal enthusiasm for reaching out to students of color, my well-prepared, highly-recommended students would be gems in ANY science grad school department.

Then I thought, "Why aren't colleges scouting academic talent the way athletic departments are doing?" The arena exists...There are AP tests, magnet schools, and science & engineering competitions (e.g. NSBE and Intel) that point out who the brightest science and math high school scholars are. Why aren't College Professors trolling around the local school districts and state science fair competitions? We're just completely sleeping on some potentionally great talent... Maybe then we won't be wondering - Where are the grad students?

Scraping your way out of poverty

What does it take to get out of poverty and live in the land of self-sustaining middle-income level? I don’t know. I’m convinced it is all about tenacious self-determination and luck.

But a host of experts and other concerned people propose a suite of answers. I was quite surprised to come across a posting in ScienceBlog about economics and poverty. But it is an interesting post: Job growth not the only factor in reducing poverty in large metro areas. According to a study by researchers at Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University, despite an increase in the number of jobs created during the 1990s, many people living in large metro areas across the United States failed to find jobs. The study suggests that it may be easier for people living in small metropolitan areas to get out of poverty than it is for those living in large metro areas. Hmm. Is this about competition and marketing forces?

I was also flipping channels and watching CSPAN when I came across Star Parker of the Coalition for Urban Renewal and Education. It is a Washington, DC based think tank (very conservative leaning) that addresses the moral and practical obstacles of poverty elimination. I’m still not sure where I stand. She makes a lot of valid points, but don’t buy that very conservative agendas hold the best answers to poverty elimination any more than liberal agendas did. Plus, I’m biased. Any organization that thinks Reagan was such a great leader when it comes to economics and poverty-elimination is just crack-smoking to me. In my book, Reagan is the devil.

Finally, my blog friend at Education and Class has some great recent posts about this topic.
Learning Your Way Into the Middle Class? Which examines this idea of how the (public) education system plays a critical role in preparing our young citizens to be productive contributing members of society? Without an adequate education (what does that mean nowadays?) then citizens can’t compete for ‘good’ jobs and these ‘good, middle-class-level’ jobs are taken to other countries or given to ‘other people’. Personally, I think education makes a difference – whether it’s formal or informal. Basically, upwardly mobile jobs aren’t given to those who perform rote, non-thinking, unspecialized duties. To set yourself apart and to be on the “fast track” you’ve got to be a thinker AND a doer – one who can cease opportunity and create it.

Cross Post: Towards Solving the Math-Science Achievement Gap - Eddie Griffin

Fellow AfroSpear Member and Educator, Brother Eddie Griffin has written a position paper about the sad statistics concerning the Math-Science Achievement gap here in this nation. Students of color are WAY behind their white classmates in most subjects and at every level. And in math and science education, the gap is more like a chasm. And class (socioeconomics) pla s a big part. "Wealthier" school districts just have better resources and the students benefit. It's time that those of us who care about these issues participate - in one way or another.

Reinforcing Class Roles in Public Education

I was reading one of my listed Blogs - Education and Class - and responded to an article about Teaching Working Class Kids. The part that caught my eye was how "real "to do keep it when teaching kids. The fact is there are barriers out there that get in the way of working class and poor students, but as Eduwonkette pointed out we can’t tell kids, “Forget it. The deck is stacked against you. Give up.” But if we simply tell them, “Work hard. Be nice” . We teach compliance with a system structured to favor some over others. How, then, to navigate this chasm that is also called the “achievement gap?”

Here is my response.

Working hard and being nice is good, but not enough. At least by middle school age (definitely high school) kids begin to see the class differences - school district a vs b or kids in college track classes vs vo-tech classes. They may not be able to describe it, but they recognize it and begin to respond (rebel). The most clever kids realized it, called it what it was and was able to manuever. I think I was that kind of kid. I hate unfairness, but I accept it is real, confront it when possible, and exploit the technicalities in my favor if fairness fails.

I always favored telling students what was real — giving them the playbook to how successful people do it. The challenge is that parents and most other adults in many working-class kids lives tell them the be nice, make good grades speech. So even if a teacher does give the youth the real deal, the message is overwhelmed by the more common, but vague messages from home.

Many of these kids rarely get detailed explanations or descriptions of what to do or how to do things in life or what is expected of them in adulthood. I noticed the exact opposite among my better-off friends in middle and high school. Their parents gave them specific suggestions or instructions about what to expect from life & what they expected of them.

I sometimes thinks it’s these details - or lack thereof - that lay the foundation for some kids taking off after high school & some just hanging around the neighborhood hoping for a break.

Intellectualism as a Class Factor


Intellectual interests, pursuits, and expertise are also class factors. I’ll admit my snobbishness is intellectually based. My reasons why aren’t well-organized, but I think it is because I view education and intellectualism as egalitarian pursuits. You don’t have to come from a particular family or social class to be well-read and up on current events. You don’t have to come from a long line of scholars or artists to become one yourself or to help others become scholars or artists. It is a free and open. So, why aren’t more people pursuing art and scholarship? Why don't “hard-working (white) Americans” or “folks from the hood” appreciate scholarly pursuits?

Where is the American Intelligentsia? First, I’ll define the word. It describes the scientific, literary, artistic and other intellectual members of society. The term is Russian in origin and used around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin during which time the critical, thinking members of society were hunted down. Sometimes, I feel like that is happening today – in this nation. The wave and devotion to anti-intellectualism and carnal pursuits leaves me slack-jawed. Not to mention the angry response to Presidential Candidate Barack Obama & his wife and their Ivy League Educations. (Let’s be clear – Hillary and George W and John Kerry and most Presidential candidates have Ivy League or Posh college & law school educations. What makes the Obamas so uppity?)
And I feel like the Black Community has a heaping extra dose of this herd-stupidity. Kids, especially young men, are chastised for doing well in school. Crack smoking. This aversion to education or even informal scholarly pursuits just seems to make class differences (and exclusions) within our demographic more pronounced. And despite some economic levying, my patience with “financially well-off” blacks but who are as un-read and un-discerning as my sweet-hearted, but “country-as-a-dozen-of- eggs” Delta Mississippi relatives makes me want to cull the Black middle class herd.


So, where is the African-American Intelligentsia? I found his New York Times Article -Magazine for the Black Intelligentsia produced by Law Professor Randall Kennedy.

An excerpt:

There was, for example, a long polemic blasting Harvard Law School for what its author saw as a stress on "white cultural norms" at the expense of "subordinate communities."
"It was clear for a long time that if you went to a bookstore or a newsstand, you wouldn't find a black American equivalent of a Commentary Magazine or a Tikkun," Professor Kennedy said during an interview at Harvard. The reference was to magazines, one generally conservative and the other liberal, that focus on Jewish issues. "That was a real weakness for the African-American intelligentsia, which hasn't had much of an institutional base," he said.

This article was published in 1991! I was in high school that year! And even then there was talk of pounding white cultural norms in the ground – so this stuff we’re - or rather Obama is -dealing with isn’t new.

Professor Randall Kennedy’s comment about there being NO institutional base for Black Intellectualism or Intelligentsia was very true. Considering I’d never heard of this magazine - Reconstruction - until now, and it didn’t last too long, proves it didn’t become an institutional base either. So many concerned Black citizens and Black intellectuals have been put out over the prevailing imagery (and hi-jacking) of Black American culture by BET and other Ghetto-isms, maybe this is the intra-community publicity war worth taking on. Build up the Black Intelligentsia! (?) Can we do that without becoming evil snobbish tyrants against our less educated brethren? I don’t know.
But in the meantime, does the internet, specifically, the AfroSpear, provide that fertile soil for such an institutional movement to spring forth?

Africa Day - The Role of Math & Science in Promoting the Continent's Prosperity

The African Union celebrates May 25 as African Day. Since 1963, the Organization of African Union has celebrated African Unity and Cooperative Growth of countries. The AU aims to create an economically (and socially) stable continent from the wake of colonialism and natural resources mismanagement.
Computer Scientist and African Activist Philip Emeagwali ushered in this year's Africa Day an essay “Africa Must Produce or Perish”. The Continent deals with a host of issues. Science and Mathematics are the foundations of innovations in economic development and stability. But who is responsible for resolving these matters - the former colonists, NGOs like the Red Cross, well-intentioned nations like the US or the United Nations...or Africans?
Only Africans will solve Africa's problem. Mathematics & Science lead to peace and prosperity. How bold is that statement? TED and the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences are looking for the Next Einstein in Africa! The Next Einstein can be African!

Promoting quality education, especially science and math education, is the path to eradicating poverty and hunger and instability and inequality. Support the Next Einstein Program. Its goal is to open fifteen AIMS centers in the next three to five years. And it is possible. Five students study at AIMS for the cost of educating one student in the US or Europe. You can help by donating money to provide scholarships, building awareness and contributing materials, learning equipment/supplies, or expertise.

Education for All: a Global Initiative


UNESCO promotes quality inclusive education for all learners, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable through the Education Division. The Division is divided into themes such as early childhood education, primary education, secondary education - which includes techincal and science education, higher education, literacy, HIV/AIDS Education, and Teacher Education. throughout the world. The Organization addresses the education needs of street and working children, drug users, the disabled and other vulnerable groups through such initiatives as its Program for the Education of Children in Need - which is a collaboration with the Social & Human Science Division and the “Another way to learn” project.


This makes me wonder if of our children here in the States (the inner-city and rural areas) qualify for UNESCO's attention and funds. The state of this nation's public education system is shameful. Children from many Inner-city and rural communities are dealing with the same obstabcles - multi-generation poverty, street-living, a crime culture, working (or hustling to support a family), drug users and sellers issues, etc. are documented. These groups are just as vulnerable and theChildren just aren't getting educated. And having spent some time in an "Urban School District" I know that these kids are dealing with some overwhelming circumstances -- early parenthood, STD, just plain ignorant about what to do after high school, intense gang activity, and drug trafficking -- just to name a few. Something needs to change; something new and innovative is needed.

World Cultural Diversity Day - May 21st

Today is World Cultural Diversity Day as declared by UNESCO - The United Nations Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication Organization. By celebrating the dialogue of cultures through words, sounds and images .

The Day aims provide world citizens with an opportunity to deepen understanding of the values of Cultural Diversity and to learn to "live together" better. This is why UNESCO appeals to the Member States as well as to all civil society to celebrate this World Day by involving as many actors and partners as possible.
We must now give greater recognition to culture as a contributor to truly sustainable development that respects people and environments, and serves the cause of dialogue and peace. In this way we shall be able to recover the sense of our joint commitment to promoting "the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind."

Pre-College Computer Science Camp for youth

Attention to all the College Park, Maryland Area!!


The Dept of Computer Science at the University of Maryland is sponsoring their annual Passport Program this Summer for middle and high school students interested in computer science or computer programming. This program is offered at no cost to the student.
Free Supplemental Education in Computer Programming. This beyond just application or using a computer. These classes are about creating and designing software. Wow! What a fantastic opportunty for students. It looks good on college applications. Makes your child or students more employeable or college ready!
The online application needs to be completed by the May 30, 2008 deadline. Since, I so obviously overlook Technological sciences so often, I'm trying to make amends here and there. Please share this information with any student, parent or teacher that you think might be interested.

Evolution Debate - Science vs. Faith

The Debate about teaching Evolution in Science Classes and whether to include lessons about "alternative" theories has been a matter of science education contention forever, it seems. Feb 29, 2008 issue of Science magazine reported that Florida Standards Support Evolution--With a Twist.

One of the main counters to teaching evolution is a semantics issue. The word theory ties counters' panties in a knot. In lay terms, a theory is a guess, a whim. But in science, it is a firmly supported statement (hypothesis) that has withstood strong contests. A theory is a big deal, it pretty much set and that's it. For example, gravity is a theoretical concept (of physics), the Law of energy conservation is 'just a theory'. So when anti-evolution legislators in Florida wanted to undermine science education standards and dupe the public into thinking evolution was just sample fancy theory and tried to legally change the text books to say "evolution is a theory", suave scientists and science educators complied...Fully. They changed the language through out to make it parallel. They applied the phrase to every major, time-tested scientific concept. So not only is evolution explained to be a "scientific theory of evolution" but also things like "the scientific theory of photosynthesis".

Gotcha!!

But this matter is serious. Religious zealots are serious about undermining quality science education. Why? Many reasons, one of the best answers comes from a Florida legislator who tried to re-word the science standards for evolution, Donna Callaway. She says "People have asked me why I don't question math concepts or grammar," she explained to Science. "I tell them, 'Those things have nothing to do with life. Evolution is personal, and it affects our beliefs.' "

My response to that statement....WOW. That is naive. Plus, that's apple-picking. Even Nisbet commented on this issue in his blog posting Why the PZ Myers Affair is Really, Really Bad for Science. I completely share the sentiments of this blog. In fact I was having a great discussion with a friend about evolution distorting people's spiritual beliefs. I think it is crap to assume studying science makes one more likely to become atheist. I just don't buy that evolution affects our beliefs -- assuming one understands the concept. That's the problem. Too many people are guessing what they think it means. And what makes it right for some people to tell us what is right to impact out beliefs. I guess studying science is heresy -- leads to critical thinking, discernment, challenges to authority. Damn independent thinkers. Can't have that. Let's protect them from themselves...Change the science standards.

But for many people (outside of science) it seems a plausible correlation. Many of my peers are atheist, agnostic, or spiritually neutral. But none that I know are that way because of studying science. They were that way long before studying science. And I also know scientists of faith, who were also that way before studying science. Go figure.

Is there a relationship between science and atheism? Perhaps. But you can't automatically conclude it is causal.
